Machete attack – Jihadists kill 27 in Republic of Congo

Date:

At least 27 civilians were killed in a new bloody attack by suspected jihadists on a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday. This is reported by the Kivu Security Tracker (KST), which documents the violence in the region with the help of experts, via Twitter.

The African country’s military had previously announced that the Islamist rebel group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) had attacked the village of Beu Manyama in the east with machetes. By the time the army arrived, more than a dozen civilians were already dead. Soldiers pursued the attackers, killing seven of them and arresting one.

Beu Manyama is located in the Beni region. The Congolese and Ugandan armies have been fighting the ADF fighters there since the end of November. According to the Red Cross, 17 headless bodies were discovered on Thursday in the neighboring province of Ituri. Her murder was also blamed on the ADF militia.

The Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia describes the Allied Democratic Forces as its regional offshoot in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. ADF fighters are accused of the violent deaths of thousands of civilians in the east of the country.

Massacres of civilians the order of the day
More than 120 armed groups are active in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and mass killings of civilians are the order of the day. The government in Kinshasa has imposed a state of emergency on Ituri and the neighboring province of North Kivu since May 2021. However, attacks by armed groups continue.
