On Monday morning, a 34-year-old slipped into the Enns near St. Gallen (Liezen district) with an excavator. He was able to save himself and was only slightly injured.
The operator of a construction company was busy securing slopes. Around 11:40 a.m., the 34-year-old from the Spital an der Drau district was driving an excavator on a path right next to the Enns. Suddenly the excavator started to skid and despite the driver’s attempts to prevent this, the machine slid into the Enns. Due to the power station there, the Enns is about five meters deep here.
Excavator driver saves himself from sinking vehicle
According to the driver, within seconds a large part of the driver’s cabin was filled with water. The excavator operator was able to break the window of the driver’s cab with an emergency hammer, free himself through the hole from the sinking excavator and save himself on the bank.
He suffered cuts and abrasions as he climbed out of the excavator, but was otherwise unharmed. The 34-year-old received first aid from the Red Cross and was taken to a doctor.
An oil barrier was then built by the fire brigades Weißenbach an der Enns, Altenmarkt near St. Gallen, Steyr (crane truck), Kleinreifling (with fire boat), Rottenmann (with boat and divers) and Großramming and the excavator was recovered with the help of a crane.
