The European Commission wants to promote the fight against cancer

Date:

The European Commission is campaigning for more vaccinations against cancer. More people should be vaccinated against HPV viruses. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are transmitted through sex and can cause cervical cancer and cancer of the oropharynx, among other things.

The Brussels authority wants to present proposals to EU states this Wednesday, EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said.

“It’s hard to tell people to change their lifestyle,” she says. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be tried. “You have to do it without scaring people.”

Goal: Vaccinate nine out of ten girls against HPV by 2030
The goal is that by 2030, nine out of ten eligible girls, and a significant proportion of boys, will have been vaccinated against HPV. The numbers should also improve with early detection.

“Less than 50 percent of women between the ages of 50 and 69, the age group targeted by screening programs, have had a mammogram in the past two years,” said Kyriakides, who says she has cancer herself.

Kyriakides also announced that a code of conduct must be signed. Someone diagnosed with cancer fifteen or twenty years ago should not be discriminated against when it comes to access to financial services.
