In Iceland, dozens of buildings were destroyed last week by numerous earthquakes in the coastal town of Grindavík. The responsible insurance company has received more than 400 damage reports so far, company boss Hulda Ragnheidur Árnadóttir said on Sunday.
So far, 53 buildings have been declared a total loss, including 30 homes. However, more than 260 advertisements still need to be investigated, Árnadóttir says. About 100 small earthquakes have occurred in Iceland in the past 24 hours alone.
Village evacuated due to earthquake
The city of about 3,700 inhabitants had long been evacuated because of the earthquakes and the threat of a new lava eruption. On Sunday, a few hundred residents were allowed to return home for a few hours to collect personal belongings from their homes. A similar action is planned for people from other parts of Grindavík on Monday.
In mid-January, a violent volcanic eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula southwest of the capital Reykjavik, sending glowing red lava flowing from elongated cracks in the earth. For the first time in almost half a century, houses in Iceland were destroyed by lava masses.
There are fears of another volcanic eruption
Experts fear a new outbreak on the island in the North Atlantic Ocean. An estimated 6.5 million cubic meters of magma has now accumulated beneath the region around the fishing village of Grindavík and is pushing towards the Earth’s surface.
