Farmers and ranchers in the Basque Autonomous Community received 10.5 million euros in compensation last year, the Spanish combined insurance system Agroseguro reported this Monday. The largest amounts were awarded to producers of arable crops (winter and spring grains, oilseeds, legumes and rice) by 6.9 million, as these have been severely affected due to lack of precipitation and hail showers. In concrete terms, there were 28,800 insured hectares that received compensation.
The 10.5 million euros represents a ‘historic record’ which is also an amount four times higher than the amount paid out by the insurance company in 2022 (2.3 million).
The damage to the Alava Vineyard (1.6 million), mainly due to frost and hail, but also in vegetables (1 million).
One of the most impactful episodes took place on 6th of Julywhen a hailstorm It affected more than 16,000 hectares in Álava, causing damage worth 6 million euros in just 24 hours. That day, the hail mainly affected winter grains (wheat, oats, barley, rye), although legume, potato, beet, fodder corn and wine grape farms were also affected.
The insured Basque ranchers received 0.6 million, according to a note from the Spanish combined insurance system Agroseguro on Monday.
