On Friday, the mountain rescue team had to rescue eight young people from Hungary from Schafberg in Salzburg and take them to safety. The group had previously gotten lost and reached the summit after about five hours via the dangerous ‘Stallion’ trail, where, completely exhausted, they alerted the helpers.
“This climb is not without danger and has already led to a number of rescue missions in the mountains,” says operations manager Sigi Gadocher. In the top area, the Hungarians sought shelter in the vicinity of the closed hotel. After a long break and with the help of the emergency services, we managed to descend safely to Winkl.
“The Hungarian youth were very lucky; such a trip with inadequate or very inadequate equipment, local knowledge and travel planning could have ended badly,” Gadocher emphasizes.
