Part repeated: the SPD wins the federal elections in Berlin

Date:

The SPD won the partial repeat of the German federal elections in Berlin with 22.2 percent of the vote. The Greens follow closely (22 percent), with the CDU in third place (17.2 percent). The result was published on Monday evening (see video above).

The left landed at 11.5 percent, the AfD climbed to 9.4 percent, overtaking the FDP, which fell to 8.1 percent. Since only twelve constituencies are affected, this has no consequences for the majority in the Bundestag. However, the parliament will be one seat smaller than what the FDP previously had. In the future, there will still be 735 members of the Bundestag, as the Federal Returning Officer announced last night.

Mayor: Call for a change of course
There was no change in the order of the parties in the 2021 federal elections. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner viewed the result as a call for Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to change course. He should break his silence “on how he wants to get this country back on track.”

The rerun was ordered by Germany’s Constitutional Court because conditions at polling stations in the capital were sometimes chaotic. In some cases there were too few ballot boxes and missing ballots. In 2021, the turnout was 57 percent, this time it was only 40.2 percent of eligible voters. However, three years ago the House of Representatives in Berlin and the district councils were also elected.

No new candidates allowed
The partial repeat had some quirks. For example, the parties were not allowed to put forward new candidates, the ballot paper had to look like in 2021. This led, for example, to former AfD member of the Bundestag Birgit Malsack-Winkemann running for office again. is currently in custody on suspicion of membership of a right-wing terrorist organization.
