The animal protection community Gut Aiderbichl, based in Henndorf (Flachgau), set an “internal record” in 2023. Across Europe, 1,913 animals were rescued, more than twice as many as in 2022 with 915 animals. “Never before has Gut Aiderbichl taken in so many animals in one year,” Gut Aiderbichl, which was founded more than 20 years ago by Michael Aufhauser, said on Thursday.
This record number of rescued animals is also due to ill-advised gifts at Christmas and Easter, but also to the fact that keeping animals is no longer affordable, explains director and board member of the foundation Dieter Ehrengruber. An animal needs constant attention and care. After a while, some of the recipients realize that keeping an animal takes a lot of effort and that they no longer want the gift.

“The animal shelters are full. The need is enormous. We help where possible and ensure that all rescued animals have a place for life,” Ehrengruber explains. There are currently more than 8,000 rescued animals living on Aiderbichl’s approximately 30 farms across Europe. The number of questions received by Gut Aiderbichl every day by e-mail, letter, telephone or in person would increase dramatically year after year. Despite rising costs due to high inflation, more animals were taken in last year than ever before. “We must distribute our resources well. For us, the animals always come first.”
In 2023, we were able to give more than 300 sheep and goats a new home. Their slaughter had already been planned, but within a very short time Aiderbichl was able to provide a new stable and thus give all the animals a second chance. “With our work we not only want to save animals, but also set an example and bring animal suffering to the public,” says Ehrengruber.
