Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has described Western politicians’ reactions to the death of popular opposition politician Alexei Navalny as “overwrought” and “unacceptable”. There is still no precise information from doctors, forensic experts or the prison system. Yet there are already reactions from the West.
“It is clear that these are completely exaggerated and absolutely unacceptable statements. They are unacceptable,” Peskov criticized. “I have nothing further to say on this subject.”
People in Russia remember Navalny
Following news of the death of jailed Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, people gathered in several Russian cities to remember the famous opposition politician.
Despite a heavy police presence, people lined up in central Moscow on Friday to place flowers at a memorial for victims of political repression. There were also similar images from St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod and several other cities.
Some people brought photos of Navalny, some cried and hugged each other. Navalny, who is believed to have died in a remote prison camp in northern Russia at the age of 47, was considered Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin’s bravest opponent and was the greatest hope for many critical Russians.
In the afternoon, Russian state media, citing the prison system, reported that he had died at the age of 47 in a prison camp in northern Russia.
Navalny’s exiled associates spoke of an “assassination” of the opposition politician and held Putin personally responsible for it – as well as for a poison attack that Navalny narrowly survived in 2020.
