While skiing with his father in Wildschönau on Friday, a holiday boy (8) went over the edge of the piste and fell about ten meters over steep terrain. He was seriously injured.
On Friday around 11:05 am, an 8-year-old boy from the Netherlands, accompanied by his father, drove downhill from the Markbachjochbahn mountain station in the “Skijuwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau” ski area. About 150 meters north of the mountain station, the novice skier crossed the edge of the piste alone and without outside intervention while turning right.
Injured to the spine
He then fell several meters through steep, impassable terrain between a stand of trees and came to rest about ten meters lower. The child suffered a spinal injury and a bleeding wound to his face in the fall.
After initial care by the snow rescue team, the injured child was flown by emergency helicopter to the district hospital in Kufstein. The Niederau snow rescue teams, an emergency medical helicopter and the Alpine police were present.
