After the death of Alexei Navalny, the Kremlin critic’s body disappeared. Navalny’s mother and his lawyers have so far searched for him in vain. A Russian civil rights platform has now launched a campaign to return the body to the relatives.
Navalny’s team had said Russian authorities refused to hand over his body until state investigators completed further tests. According to the online medium “Meduza”, authorities can then delay the release of the remains for another 30 days.
Conversation started
Human rights organization OVD-Info is calling on Russians to contact the responsible federal investigative committee and demand that the body be handed over to Navalny’s family, Meduza reports. According to human rights activists, anyone who demands his release is not at risk of being prosecuted by the police.
Russian authorities said Navalny, physically weakened after many days in repeated solitary confinement, collapsed on Friday while walking through the prison camp in freezing temperatures. According to the prison service, resuscitation attempts failed.
“Sudden Death”
A prison official told Navalny’s mother that he died of “sudden death.” Human rights activists accuse the Russian power apparatus of murder. The prominent anti-corruption activist’s associates also assume that Navalny was killed deliberately.
More than 400 arrests
According to OVD-Info, more than 400 people have now been arrested at rallies in memory of Alexei Navalny. Authorities have arrested at least 200 people in St. Petersburg alone. Another memorial site was also destroyed there, and men in civilian clothes stuffed flowers that had been placed in garbage bags (see video above). According to human rights activists, arrests took place in a total of 32 Russian cities.
