Employees of the Eiffel Tower in Paris have stopped working. The world-famous attraction was therefore closed on Monday. According to French media, employees of the Eiffel Tower are striving for better financial management of the monument.
According to the newspaper “Le Parisien”, employees complain that on the one hand the income has been overestimated and the costs for maintenance work have been underestimated.
Although the Eiffel Tower is actually repainted every seven years, it has not had a new coat of paint in almost 14 years, union activist Denis Vavassori told France Info. “It (the tower) is clearly in a state of disrepair.” Traces of rust can already be seen under the tower. Even employees who have worked at the Eiffel Tower for more than 30 years have never experienced anything like this.
One of the most popular attractions in the country
The Eiffel Tower is one of France’s most popular landmarks and is also known in the country as the “dame de fer” (“lady of iron”). About seven million people visit the monument every year. The more than 130-year-old tower, not far from the Seine, was built for the Paris Universal Exhibition and completed in 1889.
