A cellar fire occurred in Vienna-Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus on Monday evening, in which two people were injured and almost forty had to be evacuated.
The fire brigade received several emergency calls around 2 a.m. and two stairwells were heavily filled with smoke. Emergency services rescued numerous people with escape filter hoods and turntable ladders. According to professional rescue services, two people suffered smoke inhalation, including a police officer. A 23-year-old resident was taken to hospital.
37 people cared for by rescue operations
Passers-by and residents noticed smoke coming from the basement windows of the apartment building on Mariahilfer Strasse. Residents shouted for help from their windows when emergency services arrived. The fire brigade fought the fire and checked the two stairwells, apartments, the courtyard and adjacent buildings using breathing apparatus.
Heavy smoke
In the also heavily smoked courtyard, a resident climbed over a scaffolding and threatened to jump from the height of the first floor. The fire brigade brought him safely to the ground. In addition to the numerous other residents, two cats were also rescued with the help of a turntable ladder. 37 people were cared for by the special rescue unit.
The fire brigade used powerful fans to blow the smoke from the stairwells and apartments and from the basement. There were 61 firefighters on duty, which lasted two hours. The Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department began an investigation into the cause of the fire.
