After a plane was grounded in Sri Lanka for three days, the national airline has now identified a perpetrator: a (dead) rat.
A representative of Srilankan Airlines said the animal was discovered during a flight from Lahore, Pakistan to Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Airbus A330 was then thoroughly searched in Colombo, but it was only after three days that the rat was found dead and the aircraft was released.
“The plane was only able to take off after the rat was found,” an airline representative said. Care should have been taken to ensure that the animal had not nibbled on cables.
Air traffic has been disrupted
The three-day mandatory break disrupted air traffic on the Indian Ocean island. The state-owned airline, which is completely in debt, operates a total of 23 planes, but three of them have not been able to fly for a year because the required regular engine checks cannot be paid for.
Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva expressed concern that the rat incident could also scare off “the few potential investors.”
