German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) has now also spoken out about the Taurus eavesdropping scandal. “This is clearly about undermining our unity (…). It is part of an information war that Putin is waging,” the politician said in Berlin on Sunday.
“It’s about breaking up our domestic politics.” German politicians should not make the mistake of falling for Russian President Vladimir Putin. No one thinks that the publication of the recording of a conversation between German Bundeswehr officers about Taurus cruise missiles for Ukraine was a coincidence.
As reported, a Russian state broadcaster on Friday published a recording of a Webex conversation between four German Bundeswehr officials about the possible use of Taurus cruise missiles in Ukraine. For example, there is talk of whether the Kerch Bridge, which connects the Crimean Peninsula with the Russian mainland, could also be affected. Another aspect is whether the Ukrainian armed forces can operate the weapon system on site without assistance from the German Bundeswehr.
Will there be an investigation committee?
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) spoke on Saturday about a “very serious matter” that “is now being clarified very carefully, very intensively and very quickly.” The Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) has opened an investigation. It is about the content and the consequences for the regulations, according to Pistorius. The personal consequences would be “absolutely far too high.” However, there may be disciplinary consequences if someone has done wrong.
Some Union politicians are now questioning Scholz’s credibility as he may have given factually incorrect reasons for his rejection of Taurus supplies. They demand an explanation before the Bundestag and a commission of inquiry. The Union has already requested a special meeting on the incident (see video above)
Pistorius expressed reservations on Sunday about a possible commission of inquiry. But the Bundestag will certainly tackle the wiretapping scandal responsibly, he said.
