A son of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has caused surprise in Lebanon because he posted videos on Instagram shortly after his father preached about the dangers of smartphones. Mohammad Mahdi Nasrallah posted two videos for the first time this week on a previously unremarkable account. A Hezbollah spokeswoman confirmed the authenticity of the account and videos.
In it, Nasrallah’s son, who clearly resembles his father, is shown studying religious texts and explaining what he actually has in mind for the story. He said he wanted to convey religious and cultural content to a young audience in a simple way. This was surprised by many Lebanese because of the father’s earlier words.
Just a few weeks ago, he apparently called for cell phone abstinence. “Bury it, put it in an iron box and lock it up for a week, two weeks, a month,” Hassan Nasrallah urged Hezbollah supporters and fighters in the south of the country in a speech in February. The background is that, according to Nasrallah, Israel uses mobile phones as “agents” to spy on, locate and eliminate its opponents in Lebanon through targeted air strikes.
“You’re asking me where the cop is. I tell you that the mobile phone in your hand, in the hands of your women and children, is the agent,” Nasrallah said at the time. However, Hezbollah’s spokeswoman did not see this as a contradiction with the social media activities of the Nasrallah descendant in an interview with the dpa. The message was primarily aimed at the fighters, not the general population, she explained.
