More than 20 initiatives in various places in Austria want to take to the streets this weekend for an ecological and social mobility turnaround and the end of large-scale fossil projects. Several actions were announced on Thursday. Climate-friendly mobility at fair prices is required.
The “Mobility Turnaround Action Days” are announced from Friday to Sunday – from Burgenland to Vorarlberg. An example: “For the upcoming state elections in Lower Austria, we are protesting together with the farmers from Lichtenwörth against a completely outdated road project that was planned in the past millennium. We want to save the valuable Lichtenwörther fields and the Fischa-Au in the east of Wiener Neustadt,” announced Helmut Buzzi of the “Reden instead of eastern bypass” initiative in Wiener Neustadt.
“From Burgenland to Vorarlberg”
The “Action Alliance for Mobility Change in Salzburg” and “LobauBleibt” in Vienna are also involved. “From Burgenland to Vorarlberg, we will not stand by as politicians destroy all our livelihoods with new highways, mega parking garages and other crazy projects,” said Lena Schilling, spokeswoman for “LobauBleibt”.
Police are now well prepared
In any case, since the protests around the Lobau tunnel and the Stadtstrasse, the Vienna police has a lot of experience in dealing with the eco-activists. It is currently – within the legal framework – to resolve the often unannounced actions as quickly as possible in order to prevent traffic chaos. The standby unit and the special unit WEGA are mainly used for this purpose. At the same time, an announcement is made, after which the demonstration is formally aborted by an official from the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism (LVT).
The exact procedure will not be disclosed by the police for “tactical reasons”. However, it is now clear that the police are approaching with solvents (for the glue chaos) and other tools. One of the most recent campaigns ended within ten minutes. Also because the activists are usually cooperative, according to the national police. Still, there may be reports and arrests.
