Palestinian militants have attacked an illegal settler outpost near the West Bank city of Nablus. Several soldiers were injured. The Israeli government still plans to legalize further violations of the law by radical settlers.
The Palestinians fired about thirty shots at an Israeli army post guarding the Homesh settlement, the KAN broadcaster reported on Friday. As the soldiers chased the attackers, the militants detonated an explosive device. Three soldiers suffered moderate injuries and four others suffered minor injuries, the army said this evening.
Search for attackers
The army launched a search operation after the attackers fled towards the Palestinian village of Silat al-Dhar. The Homesh outpost in the Israeli-occupied West Bank is considered illegal even under Israeli law. It was abandoned along with three other illegal outposts in 2005 when Israel evacuated the Gaza Strip.
Radical settlers never really came to terms with this. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government wants to revive and legalize the evacuated outposts at the instigation of right-wing extremist coalition partners.
Illegal construction projects approved
Last December, the civilian branch of the West Bank military administration approved the new construction in Homesh. However, it is still not legal to live there. According to a report in the New York Times, three families live there in makeshift barracks. 50 religious students stay there temporarily to study the Torah. The army guards the entrances to the settlement.
Since the war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip began on October 7 last year, the situation in the West Bank has deteriorated significantly. Since then, 406 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank during Israeli military operations, clashes or their own attacks, according to the Health Ministry. There was also increased settler violence against Palestinians.
