During a visit to Germany, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron urged the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine. To soften German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s negative stance on the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles (see video above) to Kiev, Cameron has now proposed a ring exchange.
Britain supplies Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine, among other things. As is known, Scholz rejects the supply of Taurus cruise missiles with longer range from the Bundeswehr because he fears that Germany would become involved in the war. However, the government in London does not accept this position. In this context, after a conversation with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock on Thursday, Cameron referred to similar debates since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
It said: “Giving anti-tank weapons to Ukraine is an escalation. No, it wasn’t. Giving tanks to Ukraine is an escalation. No, it wasn’t. Giving Ukraine long-range artillery or long-range missiles is an escalation. No, that’s not it.”
Cameron: “Let Ukraine defend itself”
If the goal is to help a country defend itself against illegal and completely unjustified aggression, then nothing should hold you back, Cameron emphasized. “As long as we are not in a situation where a NATO soldier kills a Russian soldier, we are not causing an escalation, but we are allowing Ukraine to defend itself.”
This is how delivery could work
In an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the former British Prime Minister proposed a ring exchange with Germany. As part of this, Germany could supply Taurus cruise missiles to Britain and London could in turn supply additional Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine. “We are prepared to consider all options to achieve the maximum impact for Ukraine,” Cameron said. But he “will not give details and tell our opponents what we are planning.”
