The first ship carrying aid from Larnake in Cyprus was late on its way to the war-torn Gaza Strip, 400 kilometers away. The “Open Arms” has approximately 200 tons of drinking water, medicines and food such as rice and flour on board.
The delay was partly due to questions about the unloading and distribution of relief supplies. “There were problems with some of these issues,” Cypriot Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos said on Monday.
The US military wants to build a port
It is unclear where and how the ship will discharge its cargo after arriving in the waters off the coast of the Gaza Strip. The US military wants to build a temporary port in the next two months so that ships can anchor there in the future.
Goods must not fall into the hands of Hamas
There are fears that the aid could fall into the hands of Hamas. The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating dramatically – everything is missing.
A second shipment of humanitarian aid is waiting in port. The journey from Larnaca to Gaza takes up to 60 hours.
