The dispute between the EU Parliament and the Commission over the release of cohesion funds for Hungary now ends before the European Court of Justice. Locating the parliamentarians
After Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee voted almost unanimously in favor of the lawsuit on Tuesday – with 16 yes votes and one no – the head of parliament, Roberta Metsola, also gave the legal project the green light.
Billions bought approval for aid to Ukraine?
Parliament had previously expressed “serious concerns” about the Commission’s decision in December to release 10.2 billion euros for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government. Critics suspected a deal to convince Orbán to lift his veto on 50 billion euros in EU aid to Ukraine. At the December summit he maintained his blockade; it was not until a special summit on February 1 that the right-wing nationalist politician relented.
The EU has frozen funding for Hungary over its long-standing dispute over rule of law deficiencies. The European Commission justified the release with a judicial reform in Hungary. From Parliament’s point of view, this only addresses the grievances on paper.
