The dead children are two-year-old twins and a six-year-old sister. The mother was taken to hospital in critical condition and died from her serious injuries. The father of the deceased children was out of the house when the accident occurred.
Fire caused by short circuit
The fire is said to have been caused by a short circuit in an electric radiator. The incidents broke out in an apartment on the fourth floor of an eight-story apartment building on the outskirts of Bologna. The apartment, which was full of smoke when firefighters arrived, was sealed off. The causes of the fire are being investigated.
