A driving error cost the life of a driver on the A8 near Wels on Friday morning. But it is not yet clear who exactly made what mistake. A semi-trailer had just changed lanes when a van ‘bumped’ into the back – the driver from Ottnang am Hausruck was dead. The deficit reached as far as Aistersheim.
The serious accident happened at 10.22 am on the A8 just before the Pichl exit near Wels, after the 50-year-old truck driver from Belarus drove from the Schnittering car park over the entrance to the Innkreis motorway towards Graz.
“I looked in the rearview mirror several times to see if the road was clear and if I could change lanes,” the driver told police.
Shortly afterwards there was a ‘buzz’: a small truck had ‘struck’ the back of the transporter. It is unclear whether the truck driver “cut through” the Ottnanger (63) and thus contributed to the accident. It is also possible that the small truck driver simply overlooked the heavy vehicle or underestimated the speed difference. The man from Ottnanger (63) was trapped in the accident and was fatally injured.
