An 83-year-old senior drove too fast on the way home and overtook despite a double barrier line. Oncoming traffic could no longer avoid it and a 53-year-old was killed. The call for mandatory age verification immediately became louder again.
A field of rubble awaited emergency services late on Thursday afternoon in Wachtberg (Lower Austria) – right on the state border near Steyr. “Three vehicles were severely damaged. The rubble was spread over a length of 300 meters. Two cars came to a stop on the road and one was thrown into the ditch. We shared the operation with the local fire brigade,” says Manuel Brunner, operations manager and officer of the day at the Steyr fire brigade.
Oncoming traffic probably overlooked
The reason for the wild accident was an 83-year-old from Styria. According to the police, the senior was on his way to his residence when he attempted an overtaking maneuver despite double barriers and probably at too high speed. He may have overlooked an approaching Hungarian (53) and collided head-on with his vehicle. Due to the enormous force of the collision, another car was hit and a Lower Austrian (58) ended up in a ditch with his heavily damaged vehicle.
Three steers stuck in wreckage
Three of the drivers were trapped in their wreckage. However, only two of them could be rescued alive. All help came too late for the Hungarian, who was involved in the accident through no fault of his own. The senior and the Lower Austrian were seriously injured in the accident and had to be flown to clinics in Wels and Steyr respectively.
The van crashed into the back of the truck
While an annual test of driving skills was still being discussed on the forum “Krone” (more than 300 responses), another fatal accident occurred in Upper Austria: on the A 8 near Pichl near Wels, the driver of a small van collided into the back of a semi-trailer on Friday morning. The completely demolished transport truck was dragged a few meters – the driver died in the wreck.
