Evacuation possible – fuss about “anomaly” at Innsbruck train station

Date:

There may be extensive closures around Innsbruck’s main station on Tuesday evening. As the city reports, an “anomaly” was discovered during excavations. This could indicate a war relic. The public and drivers are urged to take precautions.

Prior to construction work at the intersection of Südtiroler Platz and Brixner Straße, an anomaly was recorded during a soil survey. This is stated in a press release from the city of Innsbruck that was sent on Monday afternoon. There is a possibility that there is a war relic underground in the area.

Driving bans, closures and possible evacuations from 8 p.m
The situation around the busy central station will be clarified by experts on Tuesday evening. This could have far-reaching consequences: there will probably be local driving bans for car traffic and closures for pedestrians in the station area from 8 p.m. Only after the deviation has come to light can it be assessed what further measures are required. These may extend to possible evacuations of the surrounding area. “All major emergency organizations are ready in the event of an emergency,” it says.

Neighbors have to prepare, cars have to leave
Immediate neighbors of the Südtiroler Platz/Brixner Straße intersection are asked to prepare for a short evacuation. In addition, all drivers who have parked their vehicles near the central station are urged to remove them.

The Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe (IKB) and TIGAS are building a new groundwater network on Bozner Platz and laying district heating pipes to provide environmentally friendly heating and cooling in the future. That is why work is taking place around Bozner Platz in various construction phases; the construction areas extend from Bozner Platz via Brixner Straße to Innsbruck’s main station.
