Thousands of euros disappeared – message from ‘son’ was a common scam

Date:

Once again, family men from Burgenland fell into the trap of sophisticated fraudsters. Once again, the perpetrators have lured a lot of money out of the victims’ pockets with the ‘father-son trick’.

Just a few days ago, as reported, there was a series of fraud attempts. Through WhatsApp messages, the criminals tricked unsuspecting fathers into believing that their son had a new mobile number. A little later, those affected received a request to transfer urgently needed money via express transfer to the alleged child’s bank account.

2200 euros away
2,200 euros were transferred for a father from the Oberpullendorf district. “Once the trick was discovered, the express transfer could not be reversed by the bank,” explains one researcher.

Never doubted identity
Using the same scam, the fraudsters have made a lot of money from other families from Burgenland. In a conversation with his ‘son’, a father, also from the Oberpullendorf district, was pressured to explicitly transfer 2,400 euros to an account due to a fake emergency. The man never doubted the identity of his interlocutor and complied with the false son’s request. It was only when the unknown perpetrator demanded more transfers that the father of the family became suspicious and alerted the police.

Don’t switch too quickly
Numerous fraud attempts failed. “I immediately deleted the fake message about a supposedly new mobile number. My son was standing next to me when they sent me the scammers,” says a man from the Jennersdorf district: “If in doubt, I would have called my son before transferring money too quickly!”
