Congress ignores: – Ex-Trump adviser begins four-month prison sentence

Date:

Former US President Donald Trump’s economic adviser, Peter Navarro, has been sentenced to four months in prison. On Tuesday, the 74-year-old reported to a prison in Miami in the American state of Florida, American media consistently report.

Navarro’s request to the Supreme Court to temporarily suspend his detention in view of an ongoing appeal procedure failed on Monday. A jury found him guilty of contempt of Congress last September.

Refused to testify before the U Commission
Navarro had refused to release documents and testify before a House committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. He claims he failed to comply with the subpoena because Trump told him to say he was exempt from it under government secrecy laws. He also repeated this statement on Tuesday at a press conference (photo below), shortly before his entry into prison.

Before Navarro, Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon had already been sentenced to four months in prison. However, he also appealed and initially remained free. This makes Navarro the first Trump confidant to actually serve a prison sentence in connection with the Capitol storm.

Trump faces decades in prison
Trump himself is also blamed for what happened in Washington. If convicted, the 77-year-old could face decades in prison. Halfway through the election year, the Republican is confronted with a total of four criminal cases. However, he managed to use legal maneuvers to postpone several of these trials against him, including the one in the US capital.

Trump’s supporters stormed the parliament building there on January 6, 2021. At the time, Congress formally confirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Trump stirred up his supporters during a speech by claiming he had been robbed of his election victory by massive fraud.

Defeat against Biden not recognized
Five people were killed as a result of the riots. To this day, Trump does not acknowledge his defeat by Biden. He wants to move back to the White House after the presidential elections in November.
