Study psychotherapy at public universities

Date:

By 2026, there should be up to 500 master’s positions in public universities to create wider and more cost-effective access. The new amendment to the law was adopted in the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.

From 2026, psychotherapy training will take place at public universities. The amendment to the Psychotherapy Act, which was approved by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, provides for a maximum of 500 master’s degree places per year. A decision on the proposed reform must be taken before the summer.

This is intended to make studying cheaper and expand the range of therapies to improve psychosocial care for the population. After criticism at the assessment stage, direct access to the master’s degree should now be open to more professions, and internships in clinics and rehabilitation centers should also become mandatory.

Also nurses and social workers
An important change after the assessment: members of medical-technical services, registered nurses and social workers can immediately enter the master’s program in psychotherapy.

“More than 100 years after the beginning of psychotherapy, training at public universities is a final step towards full scientific recognition,” Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) said on Wednesday.

The amendment also provides for long transition periods for the system change: the preliminary training for an existing training course can be completed no later than the end of September 2030, the specialist training course no later than 2038.
