The US has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip. According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, this will also include the liberation of hostages from Hamas violence.
“We actually presented a resolution that is now before the Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire, coupled with the release of the hostages,” Blinken told Saudi Arabian media Al-Hadath on Wednesday evening. He hopes this will be a “strong signal”.
Vetoed several times so far
Blinken’s comments came during a visit to Saudi Arabia for talks on the war between Israel and Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The United States has in the past vetoed several resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.
The US secretary of state met with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday, and Blinken will travel to Cairo on Thursday. There he would meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
