A major earthquake occurred off the coast of the Indonesian island of Java on Friday. The U.S. Earthquake Monitoring Agency (USGS) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4. It happened off the north coast of Java, near the island of Bawean, at a depth of about eight kilometers.
The tremors, which were also felt in the capital Jakarta, caused people to flee their homes in some cities. No injuries or damage were initially reported. Local authorities have also not issued a tsunami warning. The province of East Java and the metropolis of Surabaya were particularly badly shocked.
The country in Southeast Asia, which consists of more than 17,000 islands, is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where several plates collide. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur regularly.
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Palu on the island of Sulawesi in 2018 killed more than 2,200 people. In late 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake caused a devastating tsunami in the Indonesian province of Aceh. More than 170,000 people died in Indonesia alone.
