Investigators are currently feverishly searching for a detonator in Linz that is believed to have set fire to two garbage islands. However, a look at the archive shows that the search for an arsonist can often be very tedious and lengthy.
Wavy white-gray hair, full beard, about 55 years old: the first description of the perpetrator was quite accurate. The still unknown man is said to have set fire to two garbage islands in Linz-Auwiesen, causing fear in the associated residential complex. On February 18, a waste container burned down in the same street. The researchers assume that there is a connection and the search for the detonator is in full swing.
Up to ten years in prison possible
If caught and convicted in court, he likely faces a prison sentence of one to 10 years; that is the penalty for arson. Last year, two cases caused a stir: In June, a witness filmed from a great distance with his mobile phone how an unknown person set fire to a carpentry workshop in Taufkirchen an der Trattnach, completely destroying it. “We don’t have a perpetrator yet,” the responsible public prosecutor in Wels said months later.
And the arson at a refugee reception center that was then under construction in Linz in March 2023 has also remained unsolved since then. The Linz Public Prosecutor’s Office has suspended the investigation until new information arrives.
