During the important Easter travel season, strikes by AUA inflight staff result in flight cancellations. From March 28, work will be stopped for a maximum of 36 hours. The strike could only be prevented by an “immediate offer”.
Earlier on Friday evening, no agreement was reached in a collective labor agreement negotiation round and the dispute between the AUAS and the on-board staff came to a head.
A strike decision was announced on Saturday afternoon from midnight on Thursday, March 28, for 36 hours until noon on March 29. This was decided unanimously, as was a new request for the AUA to “immediately submit a better offer,” said Daniel Liebhart, head of vida’s aviation division. This is the only way to prevent a strike. The deadline runs until “27. March at 11:59 and 59 seconds”.
“Escalation measures by the works council and the union do not contribute to finding a solution,” said an AUA spokeswoman.
Strike day costs companies ten million euros
However, there was still no new offer, as requested by the employee representatives of the works council and the trade union. On the contrary: “One day of strike alone causes the company financial damage that can amount to ten million euros. “It is therefore conceivable that the offer of up to an 18 percent increase for flight attendants and pilots, and even up to 28 percent for co-pilots, will have to be revised to compensate for the damage.”
Accepting our offer would once again mean one of the highest KV degrees in Austria, the spokeswoman said. The employee representatives, on the other hand, only see “numbers games” and actually “just a compensation for inflation”.
AUA refers to “employee bonus”
On Friday, reference was also made to the employee bonus: the airline will pay out a total of around 30 million euros this year. If the airline is financially successful, employees will receive up to one month’s extra salary.
In addition, they are willing to increase the bonus so that employees can receive a maximum of two months’ salary in the future. From the employees’ point of view, this leaves them too far behind the resources of parent company Lufthansa.
