According to Polish information, Russia briefly violated the airspace of NATO member Poland on Sunday morning during missile attacks on western Ukraine. At 4:23 a.m. on Sunday, Polish airspace was violated by a cruise missile launched at night by a Russian long-range aircraft. The targets were cities in western Ukraine.
The object entered Polish airspace near the city of Oserdów and remained there for 39 seconds. It was observed by military radar systems throughout the flight.
All necessary procedures have been initiated to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. The Polish and Allied air forces, among others, were activated.
Lviv bombed with missiles and drones
The western Ukrainian region of Lviv was attacked by Russia with around 20 missiles and seven drones, the mayor of Lviv confirmed. There were no hits in his city, the largest in western Ukraine. He did not want to comment on possible damage in the area.
Another violation of airspace
The Polish army had already discovered at the end of December that its airspace had been violated by a Russian missile. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw then summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Russian embassy and presented him with a letter of protest. It called on Russia to “explain the airspace violation incident and immediately stop such activities.”
In November 2022, a rocket hit a Polish village on the border with Ukraine, killing two civilians. The West believes it was a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile used to defend against Russian attacks.
