Hospital also shelled – Hamas: killed in airstrike on refugee camp

Date:

At least twelve people have been killed in an airstrike on a refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the radical Islamic group Hamas. The Hamas Health Ministry said children were among the dead. Israel is investigating the incident and announced the death of another hostage kidnapped during the October 7 Hamas attack. Palestinian sources say three Palestinians have been killed in clashes in Jenin in the West Bank.

The attack hit a tent for displaced people in the coastal area of Al-Mawasi, west of the town of Khan Younis, Hamas said. Currently, thousands of Palestinians, driven from their homeland by the war that has been going on for almost six months, live in Al-Mawasi in makeshift tents. Many of them had fled the area around Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, which was under attack by the Israeli army.

The Nasser Hospital was shelled, but not stormed
According to eyewitnesses, the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis is also under attack. Eyewitnesses told AFP on Tuesday that shots had been fired into the vast grounds, but that the building had not yet been stormed. The hospital is reportedly housing thousands of displaced people.

Another Israeli hostage has been confirmed dead
According to Israeli figures, around 1,160 people were killed and 253 others kidnapped as hostages in the Gaza Strip during Hamas’ unprecedented major attack on Israel on October 7. According to Israeli information, 130 hostages are still in the Gaza Strip, 34 of whom are presumed dead, including father-of-two Uriel Baruch, who was kidnapped during the Supernova music festival. He is now dead, two groups representing families of hostages said Tuesday.

The Israeli army told his family that his body was being held in the Gaza Strip, the Tikva Forum organization said. Another group, the Forum of Hostages and Missing Families, confirmed that Baruch had been killed and described the father of a five- and eight-year-old child as a “happy person who loved life and had fun.” Uriel’s body is “still being held by Hamas,” the statement said.

In response to the attack, Israel has since taken massive military action in the Gaza Strip, aiming to destroy Hamas. According to Hamas figures, which cannot be independently verified, more than 32,300 people have been killed on Palestinian territory since then.

Senior Hamas leader assassinated
On Tuesday, the Israeli army confirmed the death of a senior Hamas leader. Marwan Issa, the “number two” of the Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades, was killed two weeks ago in an Israeli air force attack on the Gaza Strip, army spokesman Daniel Hagari told journalists. Issa was “one of the organizers of the October 7 massacre,” Hagari continued. He is the highest-ranking Hamas official to be killed since the war between Israel and Hamas began.

The Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah said it fired dozens of rockets at the northern Israeli border town of Kiryet Shmona. It is a response to Tuesday’s deadly Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon. According to previous reports, three Hezbollah members were killed. At least seven people were killed in a new Israeli attack in southern Lebanon on Wednesday evening, security sources said.
