The fierce storm claimed two lives in Eastern Styria on Easter Monday: the elderly couple was killed by a falling tree while driving in their car.
The tragedy took place on the L404 near Ilz in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district. All help came too late for the 80-year-old man and his 84-year-old wife; they died at the scene of the accident. The surviving relatives are cared for by the crisis intervention team.
Roof collapsed, wreckage was thrown into the woods
The local couple was driving on Ilzerstrasse from Großhartmannsdorf towards Ilz around 2 p.m. when an ash tree fell next to the road and landed on the car. The roof had collapsed. The wreckage eventually came to rest in a forest. An emergency doctor was only able to determine the death of the two occupants.
Another fatal traffic accident took place on the L442, also in Eastern Styria, when a 59-year-old drove off the road and crashed into a tree.
