Finland’s border with neighboring Russia remains closed indefinitely. The border crossings will remain closed after April 15, the Finnish government announced on Thursday.
In February, Helsinki initially announced the closure until April 14. This means that migrants can no longer submit asylum applications at the Russian-Finnish border crossings.
Prevention of targeted migration
In addition, maritime border crossings on Haapasaari Island, Nuijamaa Port and Santio Island will be closed to recreational boating from April 15. By closing maritime traffic, Finland also wants to prevent targeted migration from Russia in the spring.
Finland, which borders Russia more than 1,300 kilometers to the east, had already gradually closed its border in November. Finnish authorities accuse Moscow of deliberately bringing undocumented asylum seekers to border crossings to cause problems for the EU and NATO country. The Kremlin denied this.
