40 years ago, a woman from Lower Austria disappeared. Suspicion of murder: her ex-partner. On Friday, the police searched for the body with probes.
The “Krone” reported on Sunday in a large report about the mysterious case: in 1982 the then 21-year-old Maria O. – a professional assistant in a hospital – disappeared without a trace. Her boy was then six months old; the father of the child – Anton D. (name changed) – alleged that the woman had gone into hiding with one of her brothers in Canada. A statement with which the authorities were satisfied.
In 2019, however, more and more rumors began to circulate around the man – a former bricklayer – that he once murdered the Lower Austrian and then cemented her on the property of a person he knew. Conclusion: his relatives – including the son of the missing person – have reported the matter.
Murder suspect convicted of abuse
The police then launched an investigation. Terrible things came to light. Anton D. had abused three of his nieces from childhood. Because of these acts, he was recently sentenced to 13 years in prison – but he was initially released due to his alleged ill health.
Back to Maria O.: The detectives found out a long time ago that she had never been to Canada. Excavations for her in 2020 were unsuccessful. And as for the suspicion of murder, the evidence to charge Anton D. was too weak.
Search operation with sonar devices
In recent days, however, they have intensified. That is why the now 66-year-old was arrested early Friday morning. At the same time, police resumed drilling and investigations with state-of-the-art sonar equipment in the area in Lower Austria where the woman’s body is believed to have been hidden.
What gave her son hope: “I so desperately want my mother, whom I never really got to know, to be found and my father finally convicted of the crime against her.” A wish that the 41-year-old – for the time being – was not fulfilled. Late Friday afternoon it became clear: the “missing person” is not buried in the suspected storage room – and Anton D. has been released.
The Causa is still not over for the Kripo.
