The UN Human Rights Council has called for a halt to arms sales to Israel, given the situation in the Gaza Strip. In a resolution adopted Friday, the body called for a halt to all arms sales to Israel due to the “possible threat of genocide in the Gaza Strip.”
28 of the 47 members of the Human Rights Council voted in favor of the resolution, six voted against and 13 abstained.
Taking a stand for the first time
It is the first time that the UN Human Rights Council has taken a position on the six-month war between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Council has no way of enforcing its resolutions.
The UN Human Rights Council has 47 rotating member states. Austria is currently not represented
