The temperature increase due to climate change is especially noticeable in the Alps. This also includes the consequences that cause great damage in the mountains. But the big cities are also in need. Alpine expert Werner Bätzing warns of a water shortage in the summer months. Krone+ spoke to the professor.
Heavy rains, mudslides, avalanches – in recent months the Alps have sent a bitter taste of the future to the mountains. “Since solar radiation increases disproportionately at high altitudes, warming is significantly more intense than in the lowlands,” says Alpine expert Werner Bätzing, who warns of climate-related disasters in the Alps. “The Alps stand like towering mountains perpendicular to the direction of the wind and therefore form an obstacle to the wind.” While winds are not so important in the lowlands, nature in the mountains suffers enormously. “The wind will become much stronger,” Bätzing said.
