A tragic accident happened early Friday evening in the Klaus municipality in Vorarlberg. While playing with other children, a three-year-old girl fell into a ventilation shaft nearly five meters deep.
Around 6.35 pm several children played together at Klaus primary school. They hopped around on the grates of a ventilation shaft, enjoying the fact that the grates wobbled with their cracks.
However, after a while the jumping caused one of the cover grids to break loose and fall into the interior of the shaft. While a child was able to jump aside in time, a three-year-old girl with undisclosed injuries fell through the nearly five-meter-deep ventilation shaft with the loose grille.
The three-year-old was rescued from the shaft by first responders, received first aid from the rescue workers on site and was transferred by rescue helicopter to the state hospital in Feldkirch for further medical care.
