Fatal accident at work Wednesday morning in Westendorf in Tyrol: During renovation work on a passenger elevator, a 48-year-old local man fell from the fourth floor of a hotel more than eleven meters into the basement. Miraculously, the man responded. One of the first to arrive was the mayor.
Around 8:40 a.m. the Tyrolean was dismantling the old elevator on the fourth floor in a hotel right next to the municipal office in Westendorf the elevator car and the man for unknown reasons suddenly fell from a height of about eleven meters.
Mayor immediately on site
Shortly afterwards, Mayor René Schwaiger was informed of the accident by radio as a “first responder”. “I also work as a volunteer for the Red Cross,” the village boss explains to “Krone”. Finally, he rushed straight to the hotel. “Luckily I was there and I only had to walk about ten meters across the street.”
Flown to hospital by helicopter
Miraculously, the local man who had crashed responded. “Luckily we had good access to the injured person,” the mayor explains. Ultimately, he was rescued by the fire brigade on a stretcher and flown to the hospital in Kufstein with the emergency medical helicopter “Christophorus 4”. The 48-year-old was seriously injured.
Memories of the accident at Achensee
The industrial accident in Westendorf is reminiscent of a similar incident in early 2018: at the time, a 47-year-old and four other people were trapped in a stuck elevator in a restaurant in Pertisau am Achensee. While trying to climb out, the man fell about eight meters and was seriously injured.
