Heavy rain and hail storms caused significant damage

Date:

The Burgenland fire brigade had to turn out more than 30 times on Tuesday afternoon. Especially in the south of Burgenland, streets and cellars were flooded. A heavy hailstorm broke out in the Mattersburg district.

On Tuesday afternoon, the first severe thunderstorms of the year swept across Austria with hail, heavy rain and sometimes gale-force gusts. In Burgenland, the regions in the south and in the Mattersburg district were particularly badly damaged. Mario Winkler, spokesman for the Austrian hail insurance company, estimates the damage to agriculture at around 300,000 euros.

The storm also affected several communities in the Mattersburg district and the amount of water was too much for the fields and roads. Nine fire brigades with a total of more than 100 members and about 20 vehicles went out to clean the streets, remove the sludge and pump out the cellars.

In Mattersburg and Walbersdorf, huge amounts of mud were lying on the streets. Municipal workers and police were also busy blocking roads and cleaning up. The cross-site work went smoothly.
