After a 21-year-old stole a car in a settlement in Graz’s Straßgang district on Tuesday, an off-duty police officer tracked him down shortly afterwards and stopped him near the toilet of a fast-food restaurant.
It is not a good idea to leave your car unlocked in front of your house and leave your car keys and the gate remote control in it. A 21-year-old took advantage of this on Tuesday: he got into the car and drove away. The next morning the owner noticed the theft and reported it to the Kärntnerstrasse police.
The police officer gave chase
A few hours later, a police officer on his way home after the night shift discovered the stolen car in which the suspect was driving on the street. The officer gave chase and informed his colleagues. At the intersection of Kärntnerstrasse and Straßganger Strasse, the 21-year-old got out of the car and fled on foot. But he was too slow and the police officer kept hot on his heels. He locked himself in the bathroom of a fast food restaurant, hoping to find a safe place to hide. But he was wrong. Shortly afterwards the toilet door opened and the handcuffs clicked.
It turned out that the young man was likely a suspect in further car thefts. He was taken to Graz-Jakomini prison and further investigations are underway.
