“I will prevent World War III,” former US President Donald Trump promised in response to the Iranian attack on Israel. “Everything he touches turns to shit,” he said of current President Joe Biden. The US government is a strong supporter of Israel.
“God save the people of Israel. They are currently under attack because we have shown great weakness. “This wouldn’t have happened if I had been in office,” Donald Trump said at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. “What’s wrong with the world? Everyone is fighting. Russia, Ukraine, Israel and the Middle East are exploding. Everything is exploding. Next is China with Taiwan (…). Bring back Donald Trump as president and it will stop,” he continued.
Anti-war rhetoric
In recent weeks, the Republican US presidential candidate has increasingly relied on anti-war rhetoric to score points in the election campaign. He repeatedly emphasizes that the US did not go to war during his time in office. However, relations with Iran had deteriorated sharply under Trump. In 2018, the withdrawal from the international agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program was announced. The mullahs’ regime then resumed uranium enrichment and, according to experts, nuclear weapons could soon be produced.
Trump is also seen as the driving force behind the US House of Representatives’ blockade of billions in US military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
Role of the US in the Middle East
The US military supported Israel on Sunday evening in repelling Iran’s attack. The army is present in Iraq with 2,400 men. Biden has already spoken by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the attack. The US would not participate in any offensive military action against Iran, but would assist in Israel’s defense. The politician is said to have previously expressed fear that he would be involved in the conflict.
The Iranian attack was strongly condemned internationally, including by Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (both ÖVP) from Austria. At Israel’s request, a UN Security Council meeting is scheduled for Sunday afternoon (4 p.m. local time, 10 p.m. CEST).
