The Israeli army said yesterday that it will respond to the attacks “with actions, not words”, raising fears of an expansion of the conflict.
The tension is growing Middle East after Iran’s attack on Israel this weekend. Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which meets its war cabinet on Monday at 1 p.m., does not rule out a response to this attack from the Iranian regime, but the US and NATO allies are trying to calm things down to avoid an escalation of the conflict .
Iran, for its part, emphasized this Monday that it is not trying to increase tension in the Middle East and has assured that the attack on Israel was “necessary, proportionate and aimed at military objectives” to create “deterrence capacity”. “Iran does not seek to increase tension in the region,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kananí said at a news conference in Tehran.
The diplomat indicated that Tehran will “act stronger than ever to deter and punish the aggressor for any illegal and irrational action,” although his country adheres to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. In his appearance, he once again regretted the lack of action by the UN Security Council and the United States, Great Britain and France following the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1.
Meanwhile, Arab countries, including Iran’s neighbors and those mediating to stop the war in Gaza, have increased contacts among themselves and with the United States and Tehran in recent hours to prevent violence in the Middle East from spiraling out of control runs after the unprecedented event of Saturday’s attack on Israel. Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, as well as Egypt and Qatar, the last two main mediators in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, initiated a series of diplomatic contacts to this end on Sunday night, media officials told reporters.
