Devastating incident Tuesday evening at a shooting range in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern: A shot was suddenly fired from a sniper’s rifle, the projectile hitting a 59-year-old local man and piercing his thigh. The seriously injured man was taken to hospital.
It was shortly after 6pm when the incident occurred came to a shooting range in Reutte. According to police, the owner of a small-caliber bolt-action rifle, a local man (51), had placed the weapon on the counter when a 59-year-old acquaintance approached him.
“Both men then handled the gun. After the 59-year-old obtained an Allen wrench and then approached the weapon again, a shot was suddenly fired from the weapon,” investigators said.
Rescued to hospital
The 59-year-old was shot and the projectile penetrated his left thigh. Witnesses immediately started the rescue chain. After initial treatment on site, the injured person was taken by ambulance to the Reutte Hospital.
“Low tractor weight”
According to the injured person, no one had the gun in their hands when the shot was fired. “The 51-year-old owner stated that the sporting weapon had a low trigger pull and that a shot could be fired with even a slight movement,” investigators concluded.
