Even after their joint action, which included the arrest of two perpetrators, Salzburg taxi drivers still fear further break-ins to their vehicles. The police praise the drivers for their actions…
“The whole thing is not over yet,” says Franz Manussiger (Name changed by the editors) Certainly. The driver assumes that vandals are still targeting Salzburg taxis. “There is a gang at work,” says Manussiger. In recent weeks, criminals have smashed the windows of more than a hundred taxis. The loot was always modest and the material damage enormous.
The police were in the dark. But Manussiger and his colleagues stopped two taxi burglars on Monday evening, the ‘Krone’ reported. Nearly 80 taxi drivers joined forces to hunt for criminals and patrol the entire city. An Iraqi man (28) and a woman from Upper Austria (18) are in custody and investigators have seized stolen property and tools.
Taxi drivers have had enough – despite praise from the police
“Our action was a bit dangerous,” Manussiger admits. However, there was no alternative to hunting criminals together. “There is hardly a colleague who has not been affected by it. “It is enough!” the taxi driver says angrily. And: “If there are more burglaries, we can move again at any time.”
The police themselves praised the actions of the taxi drivers and spoke of good cooperation. According to ongoing investigations, the arrested duo is said to be responsible for at least 46 destroyed taxis.
