After the House of Representatives approved a new aid package for Ukraine worth 61 billion dollars (about 57 billion euros), hopes are growing in Kiev that new weapons and ammunition will soon be delivered. The chairman of the Intelligence Committee in the US Senate indicated on Sunday that this could happen as early as the end of next week.
Democrat Mark Warner told US broadcaster CBS that he hoped that once US President Joe Biden signed the law, arms deliveries would be on the way by the end of the week. The US House of Representatives on Saturday approved the aid package by a bipartisan majority, which includes urgently needed arms supplies for defense against Russia. The necessary Senate approval is considered certain – it is expected by the middle of this week. Biden must then sign the law.
Will longer-range missiles be delivered?
Kiev could also receive missiles with even longer range. The text of the resolution also calls for the delivery of long-range ATACMS missile systems. The bill states that Biden must make these missile systems available to Ukraine “as quickly as practicable.”
So far, the US has delivered ATACMS with a shorter range of 165 kilometers. However, Ukraine would like one with a range of 300 kilometers, so that it can also hit Russian targets far behind the front.
Zelenskyj asks that promises be implemented more quickly
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked his country’s partners and supporters to keep the time between promises of military aid and actual delivery as short as possible (see message above). “The time between the political decisions and the enemy’s actual losses on the front, between the approval of the package and the strength of our boys must be as short as possible,” Zelenskyi said in his evening video address on Sunday, especially in view of the most recent decision of the US Senate.
