For the first time, a separatist party in the Basque Country has managed to win parliamentary elections. After about 95 percent of the votes were counted, the separatist left-wing alliance EH Bildu, which advocates the independence of the region in northern Spain, won 27 seats – six more than in the last vote in 2020, when the EH was founded. in 2012 Bildu had achieved the best result in its history so far with 21 seats.
However, the separatists remain in opposition as it became clear late in the evening that the governing coalition between the conservative regional party PNV and the Socialists (PSOE) would continue. According to the available results, the PNV (27) and PSOE (12) have an absolute majority of 39 out of a total of 75 seats in the parliament in Vitoria, the election authority announced. This means only two fewer seats for the coalition parties.
The terror of ETA
The terrorist organization ETA waged a bloody battle for an independent Basque Country in Spain for decades. Their approximately 3,000 attacks killed 857 people and injured about 2,600. In 2018, the organization announced its dissolution. The Basque Country is now one of the richest so-called autonomous regions of Spain.
