No action planned – Iran on Israel counter-attack: “Not worth mentioning”

Date:

Following the suspected Israeli counter-attack on an air base in central Iran, there are concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could escalate further. But Iran apparently does not want to continue this attack: “The incident was a diversionary tactic and not worth mentioning,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on Monday.

“That is why we will not pursue him further,” Kanaani continued. The spokesman said the action was so insignificant that the Israelis themselves did not want to take responsibility for it, according to the IRNA news agency. Kanaani emphasized that Iran does not want an escalation of tensions in the region. At the same time, however, the country will once again respond consistently to any aggression from Israel.

Israel limited retaliation after international calls
According to a media report, Israel had originally planned a more extensive attack on Iran. This was reported by the New York Times, citing three senior Israeli government officials. Accordingly, several military targets in Iran are to be bombed, including near the Iranian capital Tehran. After calls from the US, Germany and Britain, Israel finally decided on a limited strike.

According to consistent media reports, Israel launched an attack on Iran last Friday. According to the New York Times, an air base in Isfahan province, not far from Iranian nuclear facilities, was hit by a missile. Israel has not officially commented on the attack, and Iran has downplayed it.

Israel’s attack was aimed at demonstration
The limited attack allowed Iran to avoid a counter-reaction, the newspaper reported. The Israeli Air Force deliberately destroyed a second missile to prevent greater damage. According to the report, the military strike was intended to demonstrate Israel’s ability to attack Iran without invading its airspace. The province of Isfahan was also consciously chosen. There are important facilities for Iran’s defense industry, as well as the Natanz nuclear power plant, where Iran enriches uranium up to 60 percent.

Response after attack by 300 Iranian drones
Israel’s military strike followed an attack by Iran on Israel with more than 300 drones and missiles on April 13. This followed the death of two Iranian generals in an attack on an embassy building in the Syrian capital Damascus. This attack was attributed to Israel. It has long been Israel’s practice not to comment publicly on reports of military operations abroad. Many countries expressed concern about the incidents and warned of an escalation of the situation in the Middle East.
